Question 1

What is Amazon Web Services used for?

Accepted Answer

Amazon Web Services provides cloud capabilities for building and operating workloads, including computing, storage, databases, analytics, and application integration. Organizations select individual services according to the work their applications need to perform.

Question 2

Why does an application connect to amazonaws.com?

Accepted Answer

The application may be contacting an AWS service endpoint as part of its operation. The complete hostname, request path, requesting application, and relevant service documentation are needed to understand the specific purpose.

Question 3

Is amazonaws.com one website or one API?

Accepted Answer

No. It is an AWS endpoint namespace used across different services and resources. AWS's public informational website is aws.amazon.com, while individual service endpoints provide entry points for software requests.

Question 4

Why do some AWS hostnames contain a Region code?

Accepted Answer

Many AWS services provide regional endpoints whose hostnames include the service and Region. Some services also have general or global endpoints, so the exact naming pattern and behavior must be checked in that service's documentation.

Question 5

Does an AWS hostname reveal who owns an application or what data it uses?

Accepted Answer

The parent domain does not identify the application owner, customer, workload, or data purpose. Those questions require context about the requesting application, the particular resource, and the operation being performed.

Question 6

Do credentials automatically grant access to an AWS resource?

Accepted Answer

Credentials authenticate the caller; permissions authorize actions. The credentials and permissions required for a particular request depend on the AWS service, operation, and access model.

Question 7

Where can I ask AWS questions or report suspected abuse?

Accepted Answer

AWS re:Post is a community question-and-answer service for AWS users and builders. For official contact options or suspected abuse concerns, use AWS's contact and abuse resources.
